For the past month many in the media were running around like their hair was on fire, warning of the coming apocalypse. They warned of a “massive” protest by Trump supporters that was to be held in D.C. on September 18 that would be attended by right-wing extremists and maybe even some white supremist groups.
CNN ran at least five stories, one featuring former FBI Deputy Director McCabe cautioning people about the “the upcoming right-wing rally.” Of course, CNN forgot to disclose that McCabe was fired for his role in the Russian collusion/Steele dossier fiasco. In another story, John Cohen, Chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence told CNN “[o]nline extremist rhetoric is strikingly similar to the buildup to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, with increasing calls for violence linked to conspiracy theories and false narratives.”
ABC News ran a piece stating “[f]ederal law enforcement agencies have become concerned that far-right extremists, including the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys could come to Washington for the protest.” CBS, Reuters, NY Times NBC, MSNBC, NPR, USA Today, Rolling Stone Magazine, and the AP all ran similar stories.
Ironically, the DCist - the unofficial home page of DC - got it right but were ignored by the media and the government. The DCist reported that Jen Golbeck, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies extremism online stated “If you go into the Proud Boys forums, where I lurk…they make it very clear that no one from the Proud Boys is to show up at this…‘it’s a bunch of attention seekers, all they’re looking to do is start trouble and kind of get in the way of what we want to do. So don’t [go].’”
Damn the DCist! Relying on their ‘intelligence’ the government prepared for what can only describe as an invasion. Fencing was put up; streets blocked with barriers and dump trucks; all cops were on deck - days off were cancelled; the National Guard was placed on standby; surveillance and robotic cameras were installed; some buildings were boarded up; the Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader were briefed; and the Capitol Police held a half'-hour televised press conference.
So how apocalyptic was the apocalypse? Yea about that. Seems there was more press than protesters, and more police than press. The only damage that seems to have been done was…well none.
And just to make sure you are not a bot:
This photo raises a few questions in my mind. Who advised them on their undercover clothing? Did they all go down to Fed Costume Central? Do they get a discount for buying their sunglasses in bulk? They would be less conspicuous wearing a tee shirt that says “Not a Fed.”
Of course, no massive apocalyptic demonstration is complete without a police line forming to hold back the crazed mop:
I think the only people in this video other than the cops are the press.
Far be it from me to offer advice to the powers-that-be, but maybe those cops, FBI agents, National Guard, fencing, and security cameras could have been put to better use elsewhere...
