The Taliban announced their new government and it is what you’d expect from a group of terrorist out of the 10th century armed with 21st century weapons - thanks Biden. Of the 33 members all are from the Taliban, 17 are on the UN’s sanctions list, and one is on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. The worst of the worst are:
Mullah Hasan Akhund - Prime Minister. One of the 4 founders of the Taliban and on the UN’s sanctions list. The U.S. National Security Agency notes he is "one of the most ineffective and unreasonable Taliban leaders." Nothing like having a steady hand with a good mind at the helm…
Sirajuddin Haqqani - Interior Minister. An overachiever in the world of terrorism. In addition to being a high ranking member of the Taliban he is also the head of the Haqqani Network - a terrorist group that introduced suicide bombing to Afghanistan and has close ties to Al Qaeda, is on the FBI’s Most wanted list, has a $10 million reward for his capture, and is a "specially designated global terrorist.” Just the person to be in charge of the Afghan National Police.
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar - Deputy Prime Minister. Another of the original founders of the Taliban, on the UN’s sanctions list and believed to be responsible for the destruction of the 6th century Bamiyan Buddhas that were UNESCO heritage monuments. At least he is not the Minister of Culture.
To make this merry band of marauding murderers a government can only result in increased terrorism in the world and the return of repressive policies in Afghanistan, including executions and the loss of liberties they had gained over the last 20 years, most notably women’s rights. The Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada made this clear on September 7, when he released a statement that included “In the future, all matters of governance and life in Afghanistan will be regulated by the laws of the Holy Sharia…”
The thing that amazes me is that so many claim disappointment and concern that there are no women in the new Taliban government. The Hill reports that our State Department “expressed concerns over the makeup of the new interim Afghan government…including the lack of female leaders…” Really? They are Taliban! You know the ones that whip women, think forced marriages are the norm, won’t let women out unless dressed in a burqa and escorted by a male family member, and oppose the education of women. The only surprise would be if they had appointed a woman to their new government.
Instead of the Biden Administration running around willy-nilly projecting faux disappointment and concern over something everyone with the intelligence of a toad knew would happen as a result of Biden’s disastrous withdrawal, how about they try something new - governing with competence. I would suggest a good place to start is getting American citizens out of Afghanistan, or at least stop preventing private veteran groups and other charities from doing so.
Great summary of the state of affairs of a rouge government within Afghanistan. All we can do now is hang on and go for the ride. God help us.
