How can anyone, let alone a public official, engage in blatant racism in 2021? Yet here we are:
The School Board seems to have admitted that this racist action did in fact occur. From the Atlanta Black Star:
The district told WSB-TV in a statement, “Atlanta public schools does not condone the assigning of students to classrooms based on race. The district conducted a review of the allegations. Appropriate actions were taken to address the issue and the matter was closed.”
If this is true, and it certainly appears it is, then this act is a not a mistake, not a case of good intentions leading to an unintended bad result. It is flat out racism and an intentional violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There is no possible justification for segregating children by race, none! The only question I have is - have those responsible been fired?
Have we forgotten about the long and often bloody path we had to walk for civil rights?
I am devastated that a school principle - in Atlanta, Georgia of all places - has brought George Wallace’s toxic belief in “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” back to life.1
Part of Governor Wallace’s inauguration speech of 1963.
